The 28th Bomb Squadron (28 BS) is part of the 7th Bomb Wing at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas. It operates B-1 Lancer aircraft providing strategic bombing capability. The 28 BS is the largest bomb squadron in the Air Force.

Mission

Provide all B-1 initial qualification, requalification, and instructor upgrade training for Air Combat Command.

History

The 28th was a flying training unit from, November–December 1917 before going through combat training with units of the Royal Air Force and serving on the front with British Second and Fifth Armies from, 20 March–c. 24 June 1918 (C flight participated in Somme Defense from, 21 March–6 April 1918). The 28th also saw combat as pursuit unit with American First Army from, 2 September 1918 – 10 November 1918.

The 28th also flew combat missions in Southwest Pacific from, 7 December 1941–c. 16 November 1942; the ground echelon fought with infantry units in the Philippines from, c. 24 December 1941–May 1942. The squadron conducted replacement training from, 1 February 1943–1 April 1944 before returning to combat in Western Pacific, c. 12 February 1945 – 15 August 1945.

The 28th also participated in combat operations in Korea from, 28 June 1950–25 July 1953. It furnished B–52 aircraft and crews to other Strategic Air Command organizations involved in combat operations in Southeast Asia until October 1973.

Currently, the 28th conducts weapons system training for B-1 crews. Each year, it trains more than 200 active duty crewmembers.
