Cruzeiro do Sul had its origins in
Porto Alegre in 1926 under the name Condor-Syndikat with strong German influence. The first flights began in February 1927 between Porto Alegre,Pelotas andRio Grande .Rio de Janeiro was served later in 1927. By 1934 was flying toArgentina and then on toChile usingJunkers Ju 52 andFocke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor. Because of World War II the name was changed to Serviços Aéreos Condor and in 1943 the name was further changed to Serviços Aéreos Cruzeiro do Sul.The Junkers Ju 52 were replaced with
Douglas DC-3 and by 1953 Cruzeiro had a fleet of 38 Dakotas flying. The next aircraft to be used was theConvair CV-240 and theConviar CV-440 with services throughout Brazil and international services to extended toMontevideo ,Uruguay ,La Paz ,Bolivia andCaracas ,Venezuela .The first jet aircraft was the SE.210 Caravelle followed by the Boeing 727-100 and Boeing 737-200. By 1975 Varig had acquired a majority in Cruzeiro do Sul and the route networks were rationalized. The last aircraft type to join the fleet before the integration into Varig was the Airbus A300B4.
