Binondo district ofManila . It is one of the major Chinese Filipino schools in Manila. The school offers courses of study from Pre-Nursery to High School 4 and has more than 1,500 students in all departments.Originally known as St. Stephen's Girl's School, it was founded on July 22, 1917 by St. Stephen's Mission composed of the Rector and the Chinese members of the church. The school expanded from its initial elementary academic programs to include Kindergarten classes, Chinese Junior High, Chinese Senior High and English High School curricula. It became coeducational in 1945. At present, it is recognized by the Philippine Government as a Chinese-Filipino School offering English, Filipino and Chinese subjects in the Preschool, Elementary and High School Departments. The school is an accredited school of the Association of Christian Schools, Colleges and Universities (ACSCU-AAI).
The initial population of 19 has grown to a student population of more than three thousand. The entire school campus has an area of 2.1 hectares. The 5-storey High School Main Building was constructed and subsequently inaugurated in 1963. The 3-storey Elementary Building in 1969, High School Annex Building in 1982, the 5-storey Elementary Main Building was constructed in 1992, the 3-storey Kindergarten Building and an indoor gymnasium in 1994. Aside from the classrooms, the school has modern facilities like The Auditorium, designed by Arch. Yolanda Reyes, FUAP, APEC Architect (Former Dean of the UST College of Architecture), Stephenian Hall (a multi-purpose hall), Nancy L. Yao Library, Electronic Research Center, Speech Laboratory, Wai Ling Tan Audio-Visual Center, Guidance and Counseling Center, Science Laboratories, Journalism Room, Typing Room, Home Economics Room, Clinic, Scout Center, 4 Computer Laboratories, Music Room, Practical Arts Room, the CSG Gymnasium, Indoor and Outdoor Playground, and the Jimmy Go Swimming Pool.
The school has varsity teams in basketball, swimming, volleyball, track and field, and table tennis. The school hosted the 37th Season of the Women's National Collegiate Athletic Association (WNCAA) with the theme "Victory beyond Competition."
The school is a venue for interschool activities and competitions. The school has served as host school for training sessions held by the Mathematics Trainers' Guild, or MTG, for several years already. St. Stephen's also hosted the successful 1st Filipino-Chinese Youth Leaders' Convention in February 2005 at Canyon Woods Residential Resort, Batangas.
The school celebrated its historic 90th founding anniversary on
July 22 ,2007 with the theme "God's Glory with Exceeding Joy!" In celebration, the school held the 1st Interschool Extemporaneous Speech Competition, the 1st Earth Science Quiz, and three concerts: namely, a concert in cooperation with the Biblical Seminary of the Philippines entitled "An Evening of Praise," featuring the Heavenly Melody Singers from Taiwan; a Thanksgiving concert entitled "Images of Christ" in November 2007, directed by Ms. Celia Ong and Mr. Chinggoy Alonso; and the Thanksgiving marimba concert, featuring Mr. Johnny Yu (marimbist), Prof. Raul Sunico (Dean of the UST Conservatory of Music), Mr. Conrado Ong (member of the Kasarinlan Music Ensemble), and Ms. Patricia Lim (Music Coordinator of SSHS and conductor of the Stephenian Chorale, SSP Church and Chancel Choirs).Sources
