Laporte is a borough in Sullivan County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 290 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Sullivan County.GR|6 Laporte is surrounded by Laporte Township. It was named for John Laporte. Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.3 km²), of which, 1.1 square miles (2.9 km²) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.4 km²) of it (12.50%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 290 people, 95 households, and 60 families residing in the borough. The population density was 258.2 people per square mile (100.0/km²). There were 271 housing units at an average density of 241.3/sq mi (93.4/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.97% White, 0.34% African American and 0.69% Native American.

There were 95 households out of which 27.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.6% were married couples living together, 7.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.8% were non-families. 32.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 24.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.18 and the average family size was 2.75.

In the borough the population was spread out with 13.4% under the age of 18, 2.8% from 18 to 24, 15.5% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 44.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 59 years. For every 100 females there were 81.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.3 males.

The median income for a household in the borough was $43,750, and the median income for a family was $52,500. Males had a median income of $30,625 versus $25,500 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $18,762. About 3.6% of families and 7.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.9% of those under the age of eighteen and none of those sixty five or over.
