Immigration Officers are responsible for ensuring that
Immigration Leglisation is enforced. This can cover the rules of entry for foreign nationals at the border, detecting and apprehending those that have breached the border and removing them, or pursuing those in breach of Immigration and criminal laws.United Kingdom
United Kingdom Immigration Officers are employees of the
UK Border Agency , and are governed by theImmigration Rules . These are laid down by Parliament and are a consequence of theImmigration Act 1971 . The Rules are amended by Primary Legislation when required and provide a framework to ensure that those that come to, or remain in the UK, do so legally, and those that do not can be removed.Designated Immigration Officers (DIOs) at a
port inEngland ,Wales orNorthern Ireland may detain an individual if they thinks that the individual may be liable toarrest by aconstable under section 24(1), (2) or (3) of thePolice and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 or Article 26(1), (2) or (3) of the Police and Criminal Evidence (Northern Ireland) Order 1989, or if there is a warrant for their arrest [ [http://www.opsi.gov.uk/Acts/acts2007/ukpga_20070030_en_1#pb1-l1g1 UK Borders Act 2007 (c. 30) ] ] . They can be detained for up to three hours, and can be pursued if they leave the port. If a DIO detains a person, they must arrange for a constable to attend as soon as is reasonably practicable.
