Karl Morin-Strom

Karl Arvid Morin-Strom (born June 27, 1952 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario) is a former politician in Ontario, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1985 to 1990 as a member of the New Democratic Party.

He was born Karl Strom, and changed his name after marrying Bernadette Morin on April 8, 1972.

Morin-Strom was educated at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, receiving a PhD from the latter institution in 1977. His dissertation was entitled "Witt Theorems for Lattices over Discrete Valuation Rings". He worked as a corporate planner and financial analyst.

He ran for the federal New Democratic Party in the 1984 election, but lost to Progressive Conservative Jim Kelleher in the Sault Ste. Marie riding by 2,409 votes. The following year, he defeated Progressive Conservative Russ Ramsay by 1,069 votes to win the provincial Sault Ste. Marie constituency in the 1985 Ontario election.

Morin-Strom was re-elected in the 1987 election. He served as his party's critic for Industry, Trade and Technology throughout his time in the legislature, and was also the critic for Transportation and Financial Institutions between 1987 and 1990.

He did not run for re-election in 1990, when the NDP unexpectedly won a majority government under Bob Rae. Morin-Strom was later hired by the Rae government to develop guidelines for Ontario Hydro.

Morin-Strom now teaches night classes at Nipissing University and works as a business analyst at Ontera.
