Springfield is a city in Bon Homme County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 792 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Springfield is located at coor dms|42|51|17|N|97|53|41|W|city (42.854763, -97.894814)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.7 km²), all of it land.

Springfield has been assigned the ZIP code 57062 and the FIPS place code 60660.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 792 people, 356 households, and 218 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,211.6 people per square mile (470.5/km²). There were 400 housing units at an average density of 611.9/sq mi (237.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.43% White, 0.38% African American, 4.80% Native American, and 1.39% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.25% of the population.

There were 356 households out of which 26.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.6% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.5% were non-families. 33.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.77.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 22.5% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 23.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 91.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $29,464, and the median income for a family was $40,625. Males had a median income of $25,227 versus $21,071 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,863. About 8.5% of families and 9.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.2% of those under age 18 and 10.2% of those age 65 or over.
