Jizan

Jizan (also called Jazan, Gizan or Gazan) ( _ar. جيزان) is the new name of the capital of the Jizan Province in the far south-west of Saudi Arabia. Jazan city is situated on the Red Sea coast and serves a large agricultural hinterland. It has a population of 100,694 (2004 census). In the north there are Farasan Islands. It is famous for its high-quality production of tropical fruits like mango, figs, and papaya.

Ethnography

The inhabitants of Jizan, are made up of Arabs and Africans, particularly the Somalis but also the Eritreans. Islam is the religion of almost the totality of the JIzanites, with Sunni Islam forming the majority religion of the inhabitants. Ismaili and Zaydi Shias are relatively small minority in the city.
