Fayetteville is a city in Lincoln County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 6,994 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Lincoln CountyGR|6.

History

The city was founded in 1809 in Lincoln County, Tennessee. It was named for Fayetteville, North Carolina where some of its earliest residents had lived before moving. Its namesake in North Carolina was named for Marquis de Lafayette, a general who fought for the United States during the American Revolutionary War. Lincoln County was named for Major General Benjamin Lincoln, second in command of the U.S. Army at the end of the Revolutionary War. General Lincoln accepted the sword of surrender from the British officer O'Hara representing Cornwallis and England. A painting depicting this is in the Rotunda of the Capitol in Washington D.C.

Fayetteville is located at coor dms|35|9|10|N|86|34|17|W|city (35.152750, -86.571356)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.3 square miles (19.0 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 6,994 people, 3,054 households, and 1,804 families residing in the city. The population density was 952.2 people per square mile (367.9/km²). There were 3,370 housing units at an average density of 458.8/sq mi (177.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 71.39% White, 26.22% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.81% of the population.

There were 3,054 households out of which 24.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.0% were married couples living together, 18.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.9% were non-families. 37.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size was 2.81.

In the city the population was spread out with 21.2% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 22.9% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 25.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 76.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 70.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $23,830, and the median income for a family was $32,477. Males had a median income of $26,957 versus $22,382 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,391. About 15.1% of families and 20.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 27.8% of those under age 18 and 20.6% of those age 65 or over.
