Cesar Augusto Baena Sierraalta, (born November 2, 1986), is a Venezuelan cross country skier. He was the winner of the 7 km Merino Muster in New Zealand in 2009. He is the first South-American Cross Country Skier to participate in World Cup for Cross Country Skiing.

Education

Baena was born in Altamira, Caracas. He completed his primary and high school studies at the Colegio Simón Bolívar in Caracas. He trained with Sport Institut in guidance from Tony Lindsberger at University of Klagenfurt, (Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt Austria) and assisted to German Language Lessons.

Baena was an Olympic volunteer at the Athens Summer 2004 and Torino Winter 2006 Olympics, as well at the Aachen 2006 World Equestrian Games.

At 2010 studied Cross Country Skiing training teory at Mora Folkhögskola in Dalarna, Sweden. Currently assist to an SFI (Svenska för invandrare) course in Sweden.

Sport

Cesar as a kid started horse riding when he was 6 and continued with Karate under the training and guidance from Sensei Fouad Korban until he was 12, in WSKF Dojo Prados del Este in Venezuela. After finishing highschool moved to Germany started playing Rugby, representing ASV Rugby Köln as left wing during two seasons.

Biathlon

He assisted to Military Ski trainings at Chile and Argentina. Cesar is the only and first Venezuelan athlete in Biathlon Sport. In 2007 he trained for the South American Biathlon Championship in Chile. In 2008 in Bariloche Argentina.

Nordic Skiing

While living in Germany he started to ski at age of 17. He represented Venezuela in diverse ski events since 2006.

In 2008 he trained in Austria. He was the first Venezuelan Skier at Kangaroo Hoppet 18th edition in Australia, racing 42 km. As well the first of his nation to compete at the Australian National Championships.

For the year 2008, he owns the best speed record in Cross-Country for any athlete in Venezuelan history.

Nordic World Ski Championships Liberec 2009

In 2009 he took part in Nordic Skiing World Championships in Liberec.

World Cup

Late 2009, he became the first South-American Cross Country Skier to participate in World Cup, and twice, in Düsseldorf Germany 5 December 2009 and Davos Switzerland 12 December 2009.

Oslo 2011 Nordic World Ski Championships

Along with his brother Bernardo he participated at the Oslo 2011 World Ski Championships, racing the 10 km Classic Qualification, The Free Sprint, The Pursuit, The Team Sprint, and the 50 km Mass Start. Together Bernardo and Cesar as VENEZUELA were the only Latin American team to compete in the sprint relay. Also competed in the 10 km individual sprint; the competition in which for the first time defeated the Kenyan Philip Boit just before his retirement.
