Yershov (town)

Yershov ( _ru. Ершо́в) is a town and the administrative center of Yershovsky District of Saratov Oblast, Russia, located in the upper streams of the Malaya Uzen River, some km to mi|178 east of Saratov. Population: 23,757 (2005 est.); ru-census|p2002=23,848|p1989=24,468

It was founded as a settlement serving the railroad station of Yershovo ( _ru. Ершо́во), which was opened in 1894 and named after the engineer who was in charge of building it. Town status was granted to Yershovo in 1963, at which time it was given its present name.
