New Summerfield is a city in Cherokee County, Texas, United States. The population was 998 at the 2000 census.

Geography

New Summerfield is located at 31°58′40″N 95°6′39″W / 31.97778°N 95.11083°W / 31.97778; -95.11083 (31.977808, -95.110910)^[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.7 square miles (12 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census^[1] of 2000, there were 998 people, 292 households, and 223 families residing in the city. The population density was 212.9 people per square mile (82.2/km²). There were 319 housing units at an average density of 68.0/sq mi (26.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 60.82% White, 2.40% African American, 0.20% Native American, 33.97% from other races, and 2.61% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 62.12% of the population.

There were 292 households out of which 45.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.3% were married couples living together, 7.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.6% were non-families. 19.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.42 and the average family size was 3.91.

In the city the population was spread out with 37.2% under the age of 18, 11.0% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 14.4% from 45 to 64, and 9.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 26 years. For every 100 females there were 122.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 114.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $26,071, and the median income for a family was $25,517. Males had a median income of $19,750 versus $18,393 for females. The per capita income for the city was $9,515. About 21.3% of families and 28.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 41.6% of those under age 18 and 19.3% of those age 65 or over.
