Waikato (New Zealand electorate)

Waikato (New Zealand electorate)

Waikato is the name applied to a number of electorates returning representatives to the New Zealand Parliament. In an historical sense, it can apply to a seat that existed between 1935 and 1960 and again from 1969 until the introduction of Mixed Member Proportional voting in 1996. Both of these seats were safe National Party seats; all of the five National Party Members of Parliament for Waikato went on to become cabinet ministers.

In a contemporary sense, the name refers to an electorate created after the 2006 census. It is the successor to the former Piako seat, which has been pulled north to account for changes both in Auckland (where population growth has pulled the boundary of Port Waikato around the Waikato River), and in the cenrtal North Island, where several electorates went into the boundary review under quota, forcing their boundaries further north. It has lost the towns of Te Aroha to Coromandel and Cambridge to Taupō, and in exchange gained the rural and semi-urban areas around Hamilton East, and Huntly, Te Kauwhata and Meremere from Port Waikato.

Lindsay Tisch has been the MP for Piako since its inception in 2002, and will contest Waikato at the 2008 election.

Members of Parliament for Waikato
