University of Warwick Brass Society

The University of Warwick Brass Society was formed in 1992, and is made up of the University of Warwick Brass Band, Symphonic Brass Ensemble and Chamber Brass Ensembles. All of the society's ensembles are unauditioned, and are open to all students and staff of the University of Warwick. [ [http://www.brasssoc.co.uk/ University of Warwick Brass Society ] ]

Brass Band

The Brass Band is the only contesting student brass band in the UK, and currently contests in the third section nationally. The band has been conducted by Simon Hogg, renowned trombonist and founder member of the Fine Arts Brass Ensemble, since 2002.

Contest Performances

The Brass Band contests in the Regional Qualifiers of the National Championships of Great Britain (Areas), and the West Midlands Brass Band Association Contest in Leamington Spa (WMBBA) most years. The band has been successful in qualifying for the National Finals of the Brass Band Championships of Great Britain three times; in 1998, 2000 and 2008.

Guest Soloists

The Brass Band performs an annual concert in the Butterworth Hall at Warwick Arts Centre, where the society invites a guest group or soloist to perform. The societies guests in recent years have included the Fine Arts Brass Ensemble, Philip Wilby, Steven Mead, White River Brass Quintet, and Steve Sykes.

Organisational Structure

The Brass Society is run by an executive committee made up of 8 student members of the society, elected by the members of the society at the Annual General Meeting. The 2008/09 executive committee is shown below.
