Vodnik Square

Vodnik Square

Vodnik Square ( _sl. Vodnikov trg) is a town square in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia.

It is named after Valentin Vodnik, a Slovenian priest, journalist and poet from the late Enlightenment period. There is a statue of him in the square to commemorate him sculpted by Alojzij Gangl who completed it in 1889. Across the street from the monument is a path leading to Ljubljana Castle Hill [ [http://www.slovenia.info/en/arhitekturne-znamenitosti/Vodnikov-trg-(Vodnik-square).htm?arhitekturne_znamenitosti=798&lng=2 Slovenia.info] ] .

In 1895, when an earthquake destroyed much of an old monastery containing a girl's diocesan college and library, it had to be completely pulled down and the square became an outdoor market now called the Central Market ("Osrednja tržnica") [ [http://www.ljubljana.si/en/sights/squares/vodnik_square/ Ljubljana.si] ] .

It spans the area from the Dragon Bridge across the Pogačar Square to the Triple Bridge. On one side of the square lies the St. Nicholas Cathedral. The other side, facing the river, is occupied by a monumental building designed by Jože Plečnik.
