Hurst is a city in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. Hurst is one of the Mid-Cities between Fort Worth and Dallas. The population was 36,273 at the 2000 census. It was founded by William Letchworth Hurst.

Geography

Hurst is located at coor dms|32|50|8|N|97|10|49|W|city (32.835629, -97.180172).GR|1

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.9 square miles (25.6 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 36,273 people, 14,076 households, and 10,261 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,662.6 people per square mile (1,414.7/km²). There were 14,729 housing units at an average density of 1,487.2/sq mi (574.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 85.98% White, 4.13% African American, 0.64% Native American, 1.83% Asian, 0.29% Pacific Islander, 5.20% from other races, and 1.93% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.02% of the population.

There were 14,076 households out of which 33.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 11.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.1% were non-families. 22.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.99.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 94.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $50,369, and the median income for a family was $57,955. Males had a median income of $40,734 versus $29,551 for females. The per capita income for the city was $23,247. About 4.5% of families and 6.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.4% of those under age 18 and 3.7% of those age 65 or over.

Most of Hurst is zoned to the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District (HEBISD).

Hurst is home to Lawrence D. Bell High School.

Smaller portions of Hurst attend Birdville ISD and an even smaller number attend Grapevine-Colleyville ISD.
