"I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" is a Britney Spears single released from the album "Britney". It was released as the third single in countries such as Australia and the UK during the fourth quarter of 2001.

The song was written by Max Martin, Rami, and English songwriter Dido, and was also produced by the former two. Spears said of the song, "it's a personal song about that transitional stage in life. A woman has all the wisdom that she needs and I'm right in between right now. I'm almost a woman. It's a beautiful song." [Citation

Music video

Directed by Wayne Isham, the music video for "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" became yet another to retire on MTV's "TRL". It won an award in Japan for "Best International Music Video". Based on over 30 reviews, it currently has 4.5/5 rating on iTunes.

There are two versions of the video for this track. One is the album version which features Spears mostly atop a large mountain and inside Antelope Canyon. The other is the movie version, which, because the single was meant to help promote Britney's film "Crossroads", not only includes some scenes from the album version but also several scenes from the movie. Other scenes include Spears in a gown singing in a re-creation of one of the rooms in "Crossroads," one where she is sitting near a campfire and another where she is driving the car featured in the film.

"MADtv" parodied the song in a fake music video called "I'm Not a Child (It's OK to Nail Me)". Spears was played by Jill Michelle Meleán, and the video mocked what "MADtv" believed to be her rather promiscuous and overly sexual behavior. R. Kelly was credited as the fake director of the video.

Chart performance

Though "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" was meant to help promote "Crossroads", the single flopped and it failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100; it did, however, appear on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart at a peak of number two, which would be equivalent to number 102 if the Hot 100 ran past one-hundred ranks. At Top 40 radio, the single peaked at the bottom end of the Top 40 Tracks and Mainstream Top 40.cite web | author=All Music Guide | title=Billboard Charts | publisher=allmusic.com | year=2002 | url=http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:kpfuxq9jldte~T51 | accessdate=2008-07-20]

The song received a mixed response internationally; in some countries, such as the U.K and Australia it was hit, peaking at number two and number seven, respectively. However, in other regions like France and Brazil, it failed to break into the top ten in either country. In Music & Media's Eurochart Hot 100 Singles tally, "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" peaked at number two in its seventh week being blocked from ascending to the top position by Shakira's "Whenever, Wherever."cite web | author=Billboard magazine | title='Pop Idols' Battle On U.K. Charts | publisher=billboard.com | year=April 15, 2002 | url=http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/search/google/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1463738 | accessdate=2008-07-20]

*Singer Tori Amos references this song in her 2002 b-side "Tombigbee," singing that "If you're 'Not Yet a Woman,' you've got no business playin' at this." Amos would later go on record as one of Spears' biggest celebrity sympathizers, but still performs the song in concert regularly.
