The Vanderbilt Commodores baseball team represents Vanderbilt University in NCAA Division I college baseball. The team participates in the Eastern division of the Southeastern Conference. The Commodores play their home games on campus in Hawkins Field, and are currently coached by head coach Tim Corbin. The Vanderbilt baseball team has two things in common with the Boston Red Sox major league baseball team: a 35 ft. left field wall comparable to the legendary Green Monster in historic Fenway Park (home of the Red Sox), and singing Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline in the middle of the 8th inning during games.

History

Vanderbilt's baseball team has enjoyed a great deal of success in recent years. The team qualified for the NCAA Super Regionals in 2004, had the nation's top recruiting class in 2005 according to "Baseball America", [cite web |last = Kimmey |first = Will |title = Vandy Recruits Stay For Top Recruiting Class |work = Baseball America |date = 2005-10-11 |url = http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/college/051011vandy.html |accessdate = 2007-01-10 ] made the NCAA field again in 2006, and won the 2007 SEC regular-season and SEC tournament crowns. The Commodores were ranked first in most polls for most of the 2007 season and earned the #1 national seed for the 2007 NCAA tournament.

tadium

The Commodores play their home games at [http://vucommodores.cstv.com/facilities/hawkins-field.html Hawkins Field] , which is an on-campus facility with a 2,000 seat capacity. It is adjacent to both Vanderbilt Stadium and Memorial Gymnasium and sits across the street from the McGugin Center. Hawkins Field opened in 2002 and is named after a donor who gave $2 million to help finance construction. The stadium was also the site of the first NCAA Baseball Tournament Regional that Vanderbilt ever hosted when it was the site of the Nashville Regional in 2007.

In May 2008, Vanderbilt announced extensive plans to upgrade its athletic facilities. Included in these renovations plans are the addition of seats down the first base line and outfield seats in both left-center and right field. These additions will likely increase capacity to 3,000 seats, if not more.

Head Coaches

The Commodores have had twenty-one head coaches in the program's history. Of these twenty-one coaches, only three have coached more than 300 games: Tim Corbin, Roy Mewbourne, and Larry Schmittou. Corbin is the current head coach and has been at the helm of the program since 2003 and had compiled a 193-108 record entering the 2008 season. He succeeded Roy Mewbourne, who coached from 1979-2002 and tallied a 655-608-9 record. Schmittou led the program for ten seasons from 1968-1978 and compiled a 306-252-1 record.
