Indira Point (formerly known as Pygmalion Point and for a brief period of time as India PointFact|date=August 2008) is situated on the island of
Great Nicobar in theNicobar Islands , easternIndian Ocean , and it represents the southernmost point of land in the territory ofIndia . The point is located in theUnion Territory ofAndaman and Nicobar Islands and is named in honour ofIndira Gandhi .Although Kanyakumari is the southernmost tip of the
Indian subcontinent itself, Indira Point was the furthest south on Indian soil until thetsunami generated by the2004 Indian Ocean earthquake inundated much of its area, partly submerging thelighthouse . However,geologists have stated that the sea is slowly starting to retreat back to its original position.External links
