Paul Judge

Sir Paul Judge is an experienced leader with extensive international experience of the commercial, public and not-for-profit sectors in the UK, US, Eurasia and elsewhere.

He is Chairman of Schroder Income Growth Fund plc and of Teachers TV, a director of ENRC plc, of the United Kingdom Accreditation Service, of Standard Bank Group Ltd of Johannesburg and of Tempur-Pedic International Inc. of Kentucky and a member of the Advisory Boards for Barclays Private Bank and for Abraaj Capital of Dubai.

His honorary appointments include being an Alderman of the City of London, President of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and of the Association of MBAs, Chairman of the Enterprise Education Trust, of Digital Links International, of the Marketing Standards Board, of St Dunstan's College, of the British-North American Committee and of the Wharton Board for Europe, Middle East and Africa, Deputy Chairman of the American Management Association and of the Royal Society of Arts (Chairman 2003-6), a Special Adviser to the Royal Institute of Strategic Studies (Chatham House)and a member of the Council of the Crown Agents. He is on the Advisory Board for HEC in Paris and for the Athens University of Economics and Business. He was the principal benefactor of the Judge Business School at the University of Cambridge.

He was educated at school in London and then at the University of Cambridge and at the Wharton Business School. His early career was with Cadbury Schweppes, where he undertook a number of international postings and projects, and where he led the buyout of their food companies to form Premier Brands. He was subsequently Chairman of Food from Britain, Director General of the Conservative Party and a Ministerial Adviser at the UK Cabinet Office.

He is married to Barbara and they have three sons.

Education

Sir Paul was born and grew up in London. He went to school firstly at Christchurch School in Forest Hill, South London and subsequently to St Dunstan's College. He was awarded an Open Scholarship at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied Natural Sciences and Management Studies, graduating in 1971. He then gained a Thouron Award Fellowship to the Wharton Business School of the University of Pennsylvania where he graduated with his MBA in the top 5% of his class.

Career

Cadbury Schweppes

He spent the first thirteen years of his business career with Cadbury Schweppes, working initially in the Overseas Group finance department and becoming Group Deputy Finance Director in 1978 at the age of 28. He was then Managing Director of Cadbury Schweppes Kenya which had three factories and 600 employees. In 1982 he was appointed as Managing Director of Cadbury Typhoo, which had 3,000 employees and a turnover of £150 million. In 1984 he became Group Planning Director and a member of the Group Executive Committee.

Premier Brands

In 1985 he initiated and led the £97 million buyout of the UK, Irish and French food businesses of Cadbury Schweppes to form Premier Brands. The company was very successful, winning the 1989 Grocer/IFE Award as having "the best overall performance of any British food company". Premier Brands was sold for £310 million in 1989 and he then moved into the public and political sectors. During this time Sir Paul was named one of the "Top 40 Under 40". Premier Foods, as it is now known, has become the largest food manufacturer in the UK.

He subsequently became a government-appointed Member of the Milk Marketing Board and Chairman of Food from Britain, which led to his being voted the 1992 Food Industry Personality of the Year.

Conservative Party

He was Director General of the Conservative Party, a full-time appointment for which he chose to take no remuneration, from 1992 until 1995 when the then Party Chairman described him as "the person primarily responsible for improving the management of the Conservative Party organisation and for achieving the turnaround in our financial fortunes". The Party's overdraft was reduced from £19 million when he took over to only £2 million in the 1995-6 accounts. In 1995 he transferred to the Cabinet Office as a Ministerial Adviser, responsible for policy issues such as competitiveness, deregulation, privatisation and information technology strategy until just before the 1997 General Election. He is currently President of the Mid-Worcestershire Conservative Association.

In 1995 Judge sued the Guardian newspaper for libel following a front page article concerning his involvement with party donations obtained from fugitive tycoon Asil Nadir. The article alleged that Judge and others had attempted to scupper inquiries into the donation using "old tricks". Judge's barrister David Eady QC maintained "This is a trial about Paul Judge personally, not the Conservative Party." and that the article was written " [for] the purpose of sensational anti-Conservative scandal-mongering". The jury found against Judge by a majority of 10-2, and it was the judgement of the court that he pay legal bills in excess of £200,000. UK Education

In 1990 he gave £8 million to the University of Cambridge to found the Judge Business School. He is widely involved in other educational activities and is Chairman of Teachers’ TV, President of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and of the Association of MBAs, Chairman of the Enterprise Education Trust, of the Governors of St Dunstan's College, and of the DfES’s Marketing Standards Board, an Emeritus Trustee of The Cambridge Foundation (where he chairs the Board for the University of Cambridge's CAM Alumni Magazine) and a Member of the Finance Committee of Trinity College, Cambridge.

Other UK Charitable Board Memberships

He is Chairman of the Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising, Deputy Chairman (Chairman 2003-6) of the Royal Society of Arts, Patron of the Campaign for Enterprise and Registrar of the Imperial Society of Knights Bachelor. He previously served as a Trustee of the Royal Institution and is a Past Master of the Worshipful Company of Marketors and a Past President of the Chartered Management Institute.

UK Commercial Appointments

He is currently Chairman of Schroder Income Growth Fund plc, a director of ENRC plc and of the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) and a member of the Advisory Board for Barclays Private Bank. As well as his career with Cadbury Schweppes, Sir Paul has previously been a main board director of the Boddington Group plc, Grosvenor Development Capital plc, and WPP Group plc.

International Appointments

Sir Paul is a Director of Standard Bank Group Ltd of South Africa and of Tempur-Pedic International Inc of Lexington, Kentucky. He is the Chairman of the Wharton Board for Europe, Middle East and Africa and the UK Chairman of the British-North American Committee, Deputy Chairman of The American Management Association, a member of the Advisory Board for Abraaj Capital of Dubai, a Special Adviser to the Royal Institute of Strategic Studues (Chatham House)and a member of the Council of the Crown Agents. He is on the Advisory Board for HEC in Paris and for the Athens University of Economics and Business. He was previously on the Advisory Board for Lynka Promotional Products of Krakow, Poland.

Other Honours

He was elected as the Alderman of the City of London for the Ward (constituency) of Tower in 2007 and is a Freeman of the City of London, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, the Institute of Directors and the Marketing Society, and a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute.

He has an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Cambridge, an Honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the University of Westminster and an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from City University and is an Honorary Professor at the Cyprus International Institute of Management and at the Sinerghia Institute of Moscow.

In 1996 he became a Knight Bachelor in recognition of his public and political service.
