New International (journal)

"New International" is a magazine of Marxist theory published by the Socialist Workers Party of the United States between 1934 and 1940, and since 1983.

The journal was founded and edited by Martin Abern and Max Shachtman. When Shachtman and his associates split from the SWP to form the Workers Party in 1940, they brought the journal to the new organization: an action regarded by the SWP as theft. The SWP replaced "New International" with "Fourth International", later called "International Socialist Review".

"New International" was discontinued around the time that the Shachtmanites entered the Socialist Party of America in 1958.

In 1983, the SWP refounded the magazine in co-operation with the Revolutionary Workers' League in Canada. It includes articles written by leaders of the 'Pathfinder tendency' which left Fourth International during the 1980s. It is now published roughly once every two years. The contents focus on speeches and resolutions of the SWP's biannual conference, and archival documents by Bolshevik and Castroist communists. Its editors are Mary-Alice Waters, Steve Clark and Jack Barnes; they are assisted by seven "International Consultants".
