Politics of Baden-Württemberg

The Politics of Baden-Württemberg takes place within a framework of a federal parliamentary representative democratic republic, where the Federal Government of Germany exercises sovereign rights with certain powers reserved to the states of Germany including Baden-Württemberg. Since 1948 politics in the state has been dominated by the rightist Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

Latest election

In the 2006 election, the ruling CDU increased its share of seats, largely at the expense of the opposition Social Democratic Party of Germany. However, the CDU fell one seat short of an overall majority. The Alliance '90/The Greens party increased both its vote and its number of seats by over a half, overtaking the Free Democratic Party to take third place. The CDU considered forming a coaltion with the Greens, but decided in the end to continue its coalition with the FDP. The full results were:
