Cheltenham railway station is located on the Main North railway line in the northern Sydney suburb of Cheltenham. It is served by CityRail's Northern Line. Cheltenham consists of two side platforms on a steep 2.5% gradient. Access is via the street and an overhead footbridge at the northern end. The station opened in 1898.[1] It was established mainly due to pressure from William Chorley, whose home was located near the station. Chorley prevented commercial development near the station by placing covenants on the surrounding land, which he owned, and so Cheltenham is one of the few stations in Sydney with no shops nearby.

Platforms and services

The station is served by four trains per hour each way, with additional trains during weekday peak hours. During off-peak hours two of these four train services towards Central terminate in Chatswood.

Accessibility

The station has street access to both platforms, connected by a road overbridge, giving it de facto Easy Access for wheelchairs, except for the problem of the gap and step between train and platform, the platforms being on a curve.

North West Rail Link

As part of the original plans for the North West Rail Link it was proposed to upgrade Cheltenham station to four tracks as part of the quadruplication of the line between Epping and Beecroft.[2] There were, however, no plans to stop North West Rail Line services at Cheltenham station.[3] However, due to complaints by local residents about noise and increased train services, the proposal to route the line through Cheltenham was scrapped, in favour of a tunnel starting at Epping station from the Epping to Chatswood Line.[4] Under the New South Wales State Plan there are still plans to upgrade the line between Strathfield and Hornsby to four tracks, and Cheltenham station would be upgraded as part of this project.[5]
