Vernon is a town in Windham County, Vermont, United States. The population was 2,141 at the 2000 census. Vernon is the home of Vermont Yankee, Vermont's only nuclear power plant.

The town was originally part of Hinsdale, New Hampshire, but upon becoming a part of Vermont, Vermont's lieutenant governor at that time, Jonathan Hunt changed the name to Vernon. The name was reportedly suggested by his wife, which makes Vernon the only town in Vermont to have been named by a woman.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 20.0 square miles (51.8 km²), of which, 19.4 square miles (50.2 km²) of it is land and 0.6 square miles (1.6 km²) of it (3.15%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 2,141 people, 741 households, and 574 families residing in the town. The population density was 110.5 people per square mile (42.7/km²). There were 784 housing units at an average density of 40.5/sq mi (15.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.60% White, 0.28% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, and 0.75% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.84% of the population.

There were 741 households out of which 37.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.7% were married couples living together, 7.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.5% were non-families. 17.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.76 and the average family size was 3.12.

In the town the population was spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 100.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $49,688, and the median income for a family was $55,625. Males had a median income of $35,845 versus $25,139 for females. The per capita income for the town was $19,720. About 2.5% of families and 2.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.3% of those under age 18 and 2.0% of those age 65 or over.
