History

Polytechnic High School opened in 1897 as a "commercial high school" at its original campus in downtown Los Angeles on South Beaudry Avenue, the present location of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). In 1905, Polytechnic moved to the corner of Washington Boulevard and Flower Street, in what is now downtown Los Angeles. [http://www.polyhigh.org/about_us.jsp?rn=2995860]

Polytechnic High School was renamed in 1935, in favor of the school's much admired founder, and first principal, John H. Francis. A bust of Principle Francis is presently located in the lobby of the school auditorium.

In February of 1957 Poly moved to its present site in the San Fernando Valley and opened its doors to new students. [http://www.polyhigh.org/about_us.jsp?rn=2995860] . Since Poly's relocation, the former site has been the campus of Los Angeles Trade-Technical College. The school mascot is a parrot named Joe Parrot, and he know has a female companion named, Josie.

In 2006, the establishment of Arleta High School [http://www.laschools.org/project-status/one-project?project_number=55.67307] and Panorama High School [http://www.laschools.org/employee/mpd/fs-mpd/download/map_booklets_2006-2007/Proj01MB.pdf] relieved Poly of its overcrowding. Poly today is one of the best schools in the San Fernando Valley. No gang affiliations have ever occurred on this campus. This school has the highest percentage of Latinos to graduate from here and continue their education in the best campuses in the state of California. This school has been awarded to have one of the best football teams in history. Not to mention one of the best softball teams who won the state championship in 2007. This is a one of a kind school. it holds the jobs of the some of the BEST TEACHERS in southern California, teachers that don't just teach you straight from the text, but real life issues out there for you to see that the real world is not what they draw for you in colorful pictures.
