Brian Hayles

Brian Hayles was born on March 7 1930 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. His body of work as a writer for television and film, most notably for the BBC science fiction series "Doctor Who", lasted from 1962-78. Hayles wrote six stories for "Doctor Who," and is best known for his creation of the Celestial Toymaker, in the 1966 story of the same name; and the Ice Warriors, introduced in the 1967 story of the same name.

In addition to script-writing for the radio series "The Archers", Hayles also penned a novel, published in 1975, based on the soap called "Spring at Brookfield" set in the period between the two world wars. 1978 saw an adaptation of the BBC drama "The Moon Stallion".

Hayles also wrote for such television series as "The Regiment", "Barlow at Large", "Deathday", "Doomwatch", "Out of the Unknown", "United!", "Legend of Death", "Public Eye", "Z Cars", and "Suspense". He also wrote the screenplay for the feature film "Arabian Adventure".

Brian Hayles died on October 30, 1978, whilst production for "Arabian Adventure" was still underway. The novelisation of the film by Keith Miles, published by Mirror Books Ltd. in 1979, bore the dedication "In memory of Brian Hayles".
