Onibury

Onibury
Village pub, Onibury.

Onibury is a small village and civil parish in southern Shropshire, in the lower division of the hundred of Munslow. It is sited on the River Onny 5 miles to the north-west of Ludlow, and had a railway station on the Shrewsbury and Hereford Railway.

The railway station in 1949

The parish also includes the hamlet of Walton, whilst the actual village of Onibury stands in its own parish, extended sometime in the 1960s to include parts from Clungunford. it is sited close to the boundaries of the parishes of Stokesay (now part of Craven Arms parish) and Stanton Lacy. It is the site of the country houses Ferney Hall and Stokesay Court.

The place-name 'Onibury' is first attested in the Domesday Book of 1086, and means 'fortified place on the River Onny'. The river-name 'Onny' means 'river on whose banks ash trees grew', from the Welsh 'on' meaning ashes.[1]

There is a church, dedicated to Saint Michael & All Angels.[2]

The A49 road passes through the village and there remains a level crossing with its own signal box at Onibury.
