Bulgarian parliamentary election, 2009

Bulgarian parliamentary election, 2009

Parliamentary elections will be held in Bulgaria on 14 June 2009, a date meant to coincide with the 2009 election to the European Parliament. (However, the EP election will be held on 7 June 2009 – whether the Bulgarian election date will be moved forward a week is unclear.)

The ruling Bulgarian Socialist Party wants to amend the electoral law, increasing state subsidies for political parties threefold (to make campaign financing more transparent), requiring the registration in at least two thirds of all electoral districts (thus eliminating most marginal parties) and possibly having 30 of the 240 MPs directly through majority vote.
