Greek minority in the Republic of Macedonia

Greeks form an ethnic minority in the Republic of Macedonia [ [http://www.ethnologue.com/show_language.asp?code=ell Ethnologue article on Greek] ] and official figures from the most recent census (2002) cite 422 individuals of Greek descent.Fact|date=July 2008 They are a remnant of the formerly much larger Greek community of that part of the wider region of Macedonia. Greeks are mainly settled in the historical region of Pelagonia and in the cities of Bitola and Gevgelija. [http://www.stat.gov.mk/english/glavna_eng.asp?br=18 Results of the 2002 census] ] There is some educational activity among minority members. The controversy surrounding a Greek minority within the Republic of Macedonia stems from the statistical treatment of Aromanian (Vlach) population groups, who in their majority have historically identified themselves as Greeks.
