Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway

Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway - this 28 km long access-controlled toll expressway goes a long way in easing the traffic situation between Delhi, national capital of India and Gurgaon, an important suburb of Delhi, often dubbed as BPO capital of India - and the Millennium City.

The expressway is actually a part of Golden Quadrilateral project, which itself is a part of ambitious National Highway Development Project (NHDP) and emphasizes on improving road connectivity between four metropolitan cities of India namely Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata by developing 4-6 lane highways between them. During the project the Delhi-Gurgaon section of National Highway 8 (NH8), connecting Delhi and Mumbai is an 8 lane access controlled highway. The much-delayed Rs.10 billion, 27.7-km expressway was thrown open Jan 23, reducing the travel time of hundereds of thousands of commuters and international air passengers. Going a long way in improving road connectivity and decongesting traffic, the expressway have helped commuters cut short their travel time at least one hour on an average, according to many of them. Vehicle users have to pay a toll for using the expressway, which is collected at three points, near the Indira Gandhi International Airport, the Delhi-Gurgaon Border and the 42nd Milestone.

Special Features

This expressway is the busiest inter-city route in India and handles more than 150,000 PCUs daily, the figure is very likely to shoot up further with increasing commercial and residential developments in Gurgaon and adjoining areas. The expressway was completed and inaugurated for general public on January 24, 2008. It comprise of many firsts in India after its completion.
* Starts at Dhaula Kuan in Delhi and terminates on the outskirts of Gurgaon (Manesar).
* 11 flyovers and overpasses.
* 4 toll plazas including the 32 lane toll plaza at Delhi-Haryana Border, which is the biggest toll plaza in Asia [Get ready- for a - smooth DelhiGurgaon drive Yahoo! India News] and third biggest in world.
* CCTV surveillance till IGI airport.
* SOS one way telephones at every 1.5 km.
* elevated sections of the expressway will be open only for vehicles capable of attaining speeds of 80-100 km/h. (probably a lower speed limit of 80 km/h will be imposed for the first time in India)
* 47 km of service roads for local and slow moving traffic.
* The expressway will be classified into three zones, VIP zone till IGI Airport, Urban segment till Gurgaon and Trucker's paradise beyond Gurgaon.
