Wytham (pronEng|ˈwaɪtəm) is a small village in central
Oxfordshire on the south bank of theSeacourt Stream , a branch of theRiver Thames , three miles west fromOxford . Until1974 , it was in the county ofBerkshire .The name is first recorded as "Wihtham" around 957, and comes from the
Old English for a homestead or village in a river-bend. All Saints Church in Wytham is a medieval building extensively rebuilt between 1811 and 1812 by
Montagu Bertie, 5th Earl of Abingdon .Wytham Woods are an area of long-established mixed woodland renowned for their high population of
badger s and long-term monitoring ofGreat Tit s. They are owned byOxford University and used for research inzoology andclimate change . The university also maintains a Field Station north of the village.Wytham village and Wytham Woods have frequently featured in the "
Inspector Morse " detective novels ofColin Dexter .The village and woods lie just outside the north-western part of the
