Giovanni Portilho Vescovi (born June 14 1978) is an Brazilian chess player. He is currently the highest rated Brazilian and has won the national championship five times (1999, 2000, 2001, 2006 and 2007). He was awarded the title of International Master in 1993 and the Grandmaster title in 1998. In 1998 he played on the first board in the first World Junior Team Chess Championship (for Under-20) in Rio de Janeiro [ [http://www.olimpbase.org/1998j/1998in.html OlimpBase :: 1st World Junior Team Chess Championship, Rio de Janeiro 1998, information ] ] . He won the gold medal winning with a score of 5.5/6. He participated in the FIDE World Chess Championship 2002 knockout tournament, and was knocked out in the second round against Veselin Topalov.
