Lauraville is named for the daughter of John Henry Keene, who was a local property owner and businessman active after the Civil War. The area was developed by several subdivisions during the period between 1910 and 1930 as an upper-middle class neighborhood, with many houses built on double lots. Sales in 1910 indicated houses were priced at $4,000 at a time when the typical house in Baltimore sold for $1,200.cite book|last=Holcomb|first=Eric L.|authorlink= |title=The City as Suburb: A History of Northeast Baltimore Since 1660|publisher=Center Books for American Places|date=2005|location=Santa Fe, New Mexico|pages=200-202|url= |doi= |id= |isbn=1-930066-29-5]
In 1918, residents of Lauraville were incensed that the nearby Ivy Mill property, where
Morgan State University would eventually be built, had been sold to a "negro college." They attempted to have the sale revoked by filing suit in the circuit court in Towson, which dismissed the suit. They then appealed the case to the state Court of Appeals.cite book|last =Harrison| first =Miles Jr.|coauthors =Chip Silverman|title = Ten Bears| publisher = Positive Publications| date = 2001| location =USA| pages =19| isbn = 0-967992-21-4] The appellate court upheld the lower court decision, finding no basis that siting the college at this location would constitute a public nuisance. ["Diggs v. Morgan College", 105 A. 157, 133 Md. 264 (1918)] Despite some ugly threats and several demonstrations against the project, Morgan State was allowed to be constructed at this site and later expand.Trivia
