Vine City (Atlanta)

Vine City (Atlanta)

Vine City is a neighborhood in Atlanta, Georgia. It is bounded on the north and south by Simpson (recently renamed to Joseph E. Boone) and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd and on the east and west by Northside Dr. and Sunset. Despite recent efforts for urban renewal in the metro Atlanta area, Vine City remains a sore spot in the patchwork quilt that is Atlanta. Vine City was home to the infamous "Grandma Killing" where the APD (Atlanta Police Dept) raided and fatally killed 92 year old Kathryn Johnstons home on faulty intelligence provided to them by a informant. This incident caused the APD to disband its Narcotics unit for a few months, which actually caused an uptick in crime in the area. The area also has very heavy drug and gang activity with a local faction of SMM(Sex, Money, Murder)which is a Blood organization out of New York occupying the top end of the area closer to Donald Lee Hollowell Pkwy, and other local independent gangs such as GMPL, BMF, YSM, and MDC occupying other parts of Vine City. Because of this the Operation FALCON was inacted the summer of 2008 to try and curb gang and drug activity in the area. A federal injunctin was recently filed against MDC for their role in drug trafficking, robbery, and murder in and around Vine City and other neighborhoods in West Atlanta, and Soutwest Atlanta.
