Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tinggi Kuching, SMK Kuching High or KHS (古晋高级国民型中学 ) is a public secondary school located in Jalan Mathie, Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.

History

Background of establishment and the name of SMK Kuching High School

SMK Kuching High was formerly known as Min Teck Junior Middle School when it was officially established in 1916, at Jalan Batu, Kuching. The self-funded school, which was initiated by Kuching Teochew Association, offered secondary vernacular education to Chinese children.

Min Teck Junior Middle School was the oldest Chinese middle school in Kuching after Chung Hua Middle School No.1.

In 1936, it was relocated to Jalan Mathie. The new premise was constructed on a hill near the historical Tua Pek Kong temple.

During 1941, this school was closed due to the Japanese Occupation in Sarawak. After British regained control in 1946, the school was reopened and named Chung Hua Middle School. It was under the administration of a board of management consisting of 13 main associations in Kuching. During that time, it was the sole Chinese secondary school opened after the invasion.

In 1958, this school was called Chung Hua Middle School No. 2.

After Sarawak joined the Malaya Federation with Sabah and Singapore to form Malaysia, Sarawak Education Ministry introduced an agenda to change all vernacular schools into national schools in ten years, under the Malaysia Independence Agreement. However, the offer to become a national school was rejected by the board of management.

As it was only afforded by the Chinese community, the school faced funding problems. Under the efforts of the students’ parents, the school was returned under the shelter of Kuching Teochew Association. Chung Hua Middle School No. 2 then became a semi-funded public school in 1963 to make ends meet and was renamed SMB Kuching High.

In 2002, the name was change to SMK Kuching High.

Early premises

When firstly constructed, the structure of SMK Kucihgn high was a few wooden building. The amenities included administration office, teacher’s room, science laboratories, a library, two basketball courts, one badminton court and a store room. Other than the one-floor Block 2, there was five blocks of two-floor premises, used as classrooms.

Block 2

In 1977, the classrooms were not enough to accommodate the increasing students. Block 2 was rebuilt into a two-storey. The store room was replaced by a three-storey concrete premise for science laboratories and for rooms for uniform groups.

Block 6

In 1988, a newly-constructed four-storey concrete premise, which was built on the basketball court, became Block 6. All the rooms were used as classrooms except the ground floor which was the canteen.

Block 7

In 1990, another four-storey concrete premise replaced the old Block 6 for Block 7. The first and second floors became classrooms, while the third-floor was purposed as senior science laboratories. Co-curricular activities would be carried out at the ground floor.

chool hall, garden and a new shelter

In 2000, the school hall was formed on the badminton/ tennis court. A roof aligning Block 6 and Block 7 was constructed. A garden was created on the free land between Block 1 and Block 3.

Computer lab and other facilities

In 2001, a computer laboratory, worth RM 250, 000, was formed with donations from the Jog-a-ton. At the end of 2002, a cooperation room and a small auditorium, which could accommodate 100 students, were built. One of the old classrooms was changed into the counseling room.

Missing Block 4 and Block 5

In 1996, Block 4 and Block 5 were destructed to build a three-storey concrete premise, which will accommodate the hall, mini cinema, library and Kemahiran Hidup room. However the scheme did not pass the local government bureaucracy, as it was a reserved land.

Other physical development

In 2007, the hall was renovated into a multi-purposed hall, used for sports, co-curricular activities, assemblies and talks.
