Canadian International Council

The Canadian International Council / Conseil International du Canada (CIC) is a non-partisan, nationwide council established to strengthen Canada's role in international affairs. It aims to advance research and dialogue on international affairs issues by supporting a Canadian foreign policy network that crosses academic disciplines, policy areas, and economic sectors.

The CIC is headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, and has 12 volunteer-run branches across Canada (Calgary, Halifax, Hamilton, Montreal, National Capital (Ottawa), Saskatoon, South Saskatchewan (Regina), Thunder Bay, Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria, Waterloo Region) and one in Boston.

History

The CIC was founded in November, 2007, and builds on the 80 year history of the Canadian Institute of International Affairs (CIIA). The immediate origin of the CIC was a March, 2006 agreement between the CIIA of Toronto and the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) of Waterloo, Ontario, designed to harness the natural synergies of the two non-partisan organizations. That agreement was followed by a Memorandum of Understanding between the two organizations in November, 2007. In November, 2007 members of the CIIA approved the MOU and a name change by a 97 per cent majority.

Governance

The Board of Directors of the CIC is chaired by Jim Balsillie, Co-CEO, Research In Motion. Hon. Bill Graham and John MacNaughton are Co-Vice Chairs. Senator Hugh Segal is Executive Vice-Chair. Douglas Goold is the CIC President. Other members of the board include John R. English, Executive Director, CIGI, Janice Stein, Director, Munk Centre for International Studies and André Desmarais, President and Co-CEO, Power Corporation.

The CIC Senate includes the CEOs of the Fellowship donors and several eminent Canadians.

Research

On April 15, 2008, the CIC announced its first eight Research Fellows: Chantal Blouin, Margaret Kalacska, Ryan Touhey, Jason (Guangyu) Wang, Franklyn Griffiths, Rob Huebert, Whitney Lackenbauer, and Christian Constantin.
