History and development

Jeff Gerstmann was dismissed from his position as "Editorial Director" at GameSpot on November 28, 2007.cite web

] Immediately after his termination, rumors circulated around the Internet proclaiming that his dismissal was a result of external pressure from Eidos Interactive, the studio behind the video game "", which Gerstmann had given a "Fair", or undesirable, rating along with critique.cite web

On February 21, 2008 it was reported that Gerstmann and GameSpot founder, Vince Broady, were working on a new video game website that would "take on GameSpot".cite web

] Before Davis left GameSpot, Gerstmann had been working on the concept with several engineers who he had worked with before. In the process of coming up with the name for the website, over 70 domain names were registered. Gerstmann wanted the website name to be catchy and original, stating that there were too many video game websites with the word "Game" in it.

During their weekly podcast, "Giant Bombcast", Gerstmann and Davis announced on June 3, 2008 that fellow former GameSpot editors Brad Shoemaker and Vinny Caravella have joined the editorial staff of "Giant Bomb". [cite web

On July 20, 2008 the Giant Bomb Blog closed, replaced by a picture and a message teasing that the site will be "landing shortly". The full site launched shortly after midnight on the following Monday, July 21, 2008.

Content

Unlike most video game websites, "Giant Bomb" does not heavily cover industry news in a business perspective.cite web

] During an interview on X-Play, Gerstmann commented that a lot of the video game news had become "stale".Users on "Giant Bomb" have the ability to create blogs, keep track of their game collections, and add information to game entries. [cite web

Giant Bombcast

The "Giant Bombcast" is a weekly podcast put out by Davis, Gerstmann, Caravella, and Shoemaker. (Originally it was only Davis and Gerstmann; Caravella and Shoemaker joined the cast on June 3, 2008.) It is a continuation of the "Arrow Pointing Down" podcast formerly featured in Davis' blog of the same name. [cite web

] Topics of the podcast revolve around the video game industry while also including non-video game topics such as energy drinks and movies while ending the podcast with answering e-mails sent in by listeners.

How to Build a Bomb

An episodic video feature, "How to Build a Bomb" follows the "Giant Bomb" team during the pre-launch development phase of "Giant Bomb".

Review system

Video games on "Giant Bomb" are rated on a scale of one to five stars, with five stars being the highest rating a game can receive and one star the lowest. There are no half stars on the rating scale.cite web

date=2008-03-18
accessdate=
] The reason for "Giant Bomb" only having a five-scale ratings system is because its editors do not feel the need to have five different ways of telling readers how good or bad a game is, and that the rating is just a way of showing on a scale from 1 to 5 how likely they will enjoy the game.

Video reviews were first introduced on "Giant Bomb" on June 20, 2008. Shoemaker's review of the PlayStation 3 title "" served as the feature's inaugural inductee, [cite web
