Rolento, also referred by the full name of nihongo|Rolento F. Schugerg|ロレント・F・シュゲルグ|Rorento Efu Shugerugucite book |last=Hayami |first= S.|authorlink= |coauthors= |title=Capcom Secret File #2: Street Fighter Zero 2 |year=1996 |publisher=Capcom |location=Japan |isbn= ] , is a video game character from both the "Final Fight" and "Street Fighter" series. Like Sodom before him, he first appeared as a boss character in the first "Final Fight", but later evolved into a playable fighter in "Street Fighter Alpha 2".

Rolento wears a very militant outfit with weapon belts (where he keeps his grenades) going over his shoulders and a red beret on his head. He has a red scarf under his worn yellow outfit and fights with a green staff. This is a change from how he originally appeared in "Final Fight", in which he wore an olive green uniform, and wielded a brown staff.

History

Rolento made his first appearance as fourth stage's boss in the original "Final Fight". He is characterized as a former special forces operative who was left in charge of Mad Gear's drug plants."Final Fight CD", Mega CD version's instruction manual (Japanese).] He fights using a baton, and when he's low on energy, he relies on throwing grenades. When defeated, instead of just fading away while lying on the ground like most enemies in the game, he stands up and blows himself up with his own grenades, fading away completely scorched.

The Industrial Area stage, and by proxy Rolento, were not included in the SNES version of "Final Fight", nor in its re-release "Final Fight Guy". Rolento would be featured in the SNES-exclusive sequel "Final Fight 2", where he serves as the boss of the fifth stage, Italy (where his name is spelled as "Rolent"). The Industrial Area stage would be included in later ports of the game, such as the Sega CD and Game Boy Advance versions. When the player confronts Rolento as "Alpha Cody" in the GBA version, Cody will joke about Rolento's omission in the SNES version by stating that he "took a shortcut, after beating the policeman" and "walked along the coast".cite video game|title=Final Fight One|platform=Game Boy Advance|developer=Capcom]

Rolento would make his debut as a fighting game character in "Street Fighter Alpha 2" in vgy|1996, being the third "Final Fight" character introduced to the "Alpha" sub-series. In this game, the character is no longer affiliated with Mad Gear and now seeks to build his own utopian nation. This incarnation of the character would reappear in "Street Fighter Alpha 3" in vgy|1998 and in "Capcom vs. SNK 2" in vgy|2002. The character would also appear in the American-produced 3D fighting game "Final Fight Revenge", which follows his backstory from the "Alpha" series.

While Rolento does not appear in the "Street Fighter EX" games, he is mentioned to be responsible for injuring Guile's former subordinate Holger, a character who appears in the game as Doctrine Dark.

Promotion and Reception

In a review for "Street Fighter Alpha 2", IGN praised Capcom's designs for the new characters, amongst them Rolento; [IGN staff (1996-12-11). However in the same preview Smith stated regarding Rolento's gameplay "Rolento is strong...but he's just no fun to watch." [Smith, David. (2001-11-02).
