Fleetway, also known as Fleetway Publications and Fleetway Editions, was a publishing company, mainly producing comic magazines for the UK.
Fleetway began life as Amalgamated Press, the company owned by
Alfred Harmsworth , who were based in Fleetway House. Amalgamated Press entered the comic magazine market as early as 1890 with "Comic Cuts " and "Illustrated Chips ". It also published serialized novel papers (in for example "The Thriller" magazine) such that published stories byEdwy Searles Brooks , among others.In 1959 [http://users.ev1.net/~homeville/fictionmag/b16.htm] the name of the company was changed from Amalgamated Press to Fleetway Publications. In 1963, Fleetway Publications was merged with
George Newnes Publishers andOdhams Press to formIPC Media . The name of Fleetway was still used to identify the comics magazine publishing arm of IPC, although some comics were published in IPC's name. In 1987 all comics were collected into the Fleetway arm and sold toRobert Maxwell .In 1991, this Fleetway division was bought by Egmont, who merged it with their own British based comic publishing division, London Editions, to create Fleetway Editions. At some point after 2002 the name of Fleetway Editions ceased to be used by Egmont on its publications. Egmont owned the intellectual property rights for all Fleetway characters and comics created after 1970 (with the exception of the 2000 AD stable), while IPC Media retained the intellectual property rights for all characters and comics created before this point (with the exception of Dan Dare, now owned by the Dan Dare Corporation).
In November 2004 a new company,
Look and Learn Magazine Ltd, bought the rights to that former Fleetway magazine from IPC, and then "in May 2006, Look and Learn Magazine Ltd acquired from IPC Media the rights ... to a number of nursery magazines published at the same time as Look and Learn including: Jack and Jill (1954-85),Playhour (1954-87), Harold Hare (1959-64), Teddy Bear (1963-73), Robin (1953-69), Swift (1954-63), and Once Upon a Time (1969-73)."
