Retford Oaks High School is a mainstream school in the market town of Retford, Nottinghamshire.

The school is situated to the west of the town, next to the A620, adjacent to the western side of the East Coast Main Line.

History

The school was established in 2003 when two other Retford schools amalgamated. His HRH Duke of Kent formally opened the school in October 2008.

Former schools

The King Edward VI [http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/89528 school] was on "London Road", being previously known as the King Edward VI Grammar School since August 1857 and designed by Decimus Burton. Much earlier, there was also Retford County High School for Girls on "Pelham Road". The former Retford Oaks School was on a site towards Ordsall near the [http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/89556 former] leisure centre, the former Ordsall Hall School on "Ordsall Road" (now the Post-16 Centre). Before 1977, the former Sir Frederick Milner (all male) secondary modern school was on "Pennington Walk". This became part of the King Edward VI school, and was used as the sixth form site prior to the new Post-16 centre being opened.

Regeneration

Similar to five other schools in Bassetlaw (two in Worksop and one in Tuxford, Bircotes and another in Retford), the school underwent an extensive rebuilding programme under PFI funding. It was [http://www.retfordtoday.co.uk/news/County-council-gives-green-light.872016.jp not possible] to develop the King Edward VI school [http://www.bjjarvis.com/GrammarSchool.htm site] as a Post-16 Centre (even though the county council wanted to), because the county council did not own the property so an entirely new site was [http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/89555 built] on "Babworth Road". This site is for ages 11-16. On the former Ordsall Hall site, a new [http://www.bassetlaw.gov.uk/services/leisure__culture/leisure_facilities/retford_leisure_centre.aspx leisure centre] was built in January 2008 and a separate Post-16 (sixth form) Centre was built in September 2007, when the 11-16 site opened as well. Worksop has also had a new sixth form (and leisure centre) built under the same PFI contract.

Facilities

The school is very fortunate to have superb facilities due to moving into new buildings in March 2007. The school magazine is called the "Oak Tree". Simon Widdup, a former cricketer, is a history teacher at the school.

Academic performance

The school achieves good results at GCSE and A-Level and has improved rapidly since opening in 2003.
