Redland Green School is a relatively new school in Bristol, UK. It cost over GBP 36 million to build, this is a figure which is higher than the original budget. [ [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/bristol/6906453.stm BBC NEWS | England | Bristol | School buildings £8m over budget ] ] The school has facilities for 945 11-16 year-olds, 450 post 16 students, and dedicated facilities for 50 students with learning difficulties. [ [http://www.redlandgreen.bristol.sch.uk/ Redland Green School - Home Page ] ] When fully open it will be the 2nd largest secondary school in Bristol.

On April 24, 2008, the school was one of the schools in Bristol to be shut due to a teachers strike. [http://www.thisisbristol.co.uk/displayNode.jsp?nodeId=145365&command=displayContent&sourceNode=145191&contentPK=20467944&folderPk=83726&pNodeId=144922&bustcache=]

The overspend in the building of the school was described in the local media. The Bristol Evening Post reported that "Spending rules on major city council projects are being tightened up to try to ensure blunders such as at Redland Green School are never repeated," in an article written after the completion of the school building. History

For many years there was a call for a new secondary school in North Bristol, there were two propsed sites, at Redland and Stoke Lodge. After many years of debating at petitioning Bristol City Council finaly decided the new school should be built at Redland. This was a delight to many parents in north Bristol, but due to high demand there is a small catchment area (much smaller than planned), so there still isn't a local school for students living in Westbury-on-Trym. There are still calls to build another school at Stoke Lodge.

Name

There were many other suggestions for the name of the school. This included Paul Dirac, which was portrayed in the local press as the probable name for the school. [Various reports on BBC Radio Bristol] [ [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/bristol/4509398.stm BBC NEWS | England | Bristol | New school is named Redland Green ] ] Previously the school was known as New North Bristol School. Headteacher

The headteacher is Sarah Baker, who went to Bath University. On the website of the school she comments on her position at the school. "The first two years have been the most enjoyable and also the most challenging of my career. It is a real privilege to be in the position of starting up a school and working with Governors, students and staff to build the school community. The parents of Years 7, 8 and 12 have been so supportive and have shown a real leap of faith in sending their children to a school which did not exist and was not yet built. It is a joy to work at Redland Green School." [ [http://www.redlandgreen.bristol.sch.uk/Staff/ Redland Green School - Staff ] ]

Location

The school is located on Redland Court Road, in the ward of Redland. [ [http://www.redlandgreen.bristol.sch.uk/Contact/ Redland Green School - Contact ] ]

Catchment Area

The catchment area of the school was recently shrunk due to a high number of applications for admission into the school. [http://www.thisisbristol.co.uk/displayNode.jsp?nodeId=144913&command=displayContent&sourceNode=231190&home=yes&more_nodeId1=144922&contentPK=20454359] .

Uniform

The school website says that the uniform includes a "navy blue blazer with school badge and optional v-neck Redland Green School (RGS) blue jumper with school logo for both boys and girls." It also says that "the uniform has been designed to be smart and contemporary, but not overly formal, and does not include a tie."
