John Nelson (swimmer)

John Nelson (born June 8, 1948) is an American swimmer and olympic champion. He competed at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, where he received a gold medal in "4 × 200 m freestyle relay", and a bronze medal in "200 m freestyle". World Record

Nelson improved the world record on "400 m freestyle (long course)" August 18, 1966 (4:11.8), but the record was beaten by Don Schollander the same day (4:11.6).The world record for the event is 3:40.08, set by Australia's Ian Thorpe in 2002.
