In 1960 he set or tied 4 world records. During the 1960 Olympics, after seemingly winning the 4 x 100 metres relay, his team was disqualified when he passed the baton outside the exchange zone. In addition, he was the favorite to win the 100/200 meter dash double, but finished last in both races.
