ISCTE - "Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa" (pron. IPA2|ĩʃti'tutu supɨɾi'oɾ dɨ si'ẽsiɐʃ du tɾɐ'baʎu i dɐ ẽ'pɾezɐ; in English "Higher Institute of Business and Labour Sciences"), in Lisbon, is a Portuguese public university institute (with the unique formal status of "Non-Integrated University Institute"), located in the centre of Lisbon in the "campus" known as the "University City" (Cidade Universitária de Lisboa) which is chiefly occupied by the premisses of the University of Lisbon. ISCTE is on the way to be renamed "Instituto Universitário de Lisboa" (Lisbon University Institute), and already presents itself as such (both in Portuguese and English) in many occasions, for example when hosting international conferences.

Departments

The University Institute has about 6,000 students at both undergraduate and graduate levels and 400 lecturers (comprising Assistant Professors, Auxiliary Professors, Associate Professors and Cathedratic Professors), and offers all levels of academic degrees in Anthropology, Architecture, Economics, Computer science, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering, Finance, Business Management, Human resources, Industrial engineering, History, Computer science & Business Administration, Marketing, Social psychology, Political Science, Sociology and Planning, amongst many others specializations.

History

ISCTE was established in Lisbon in 1972 [The ISCTE was created by the [http://www.dre.pt/pdf1sdip/1972/12/29000/19461950.PDF Decreto-Lei nº 522/72, of 15th December 1972 (pdf file)] .] , from the faculty and facilities of the "Instituto de Estudos Sociais" (created in 1963), as a first step towards a new and innovative public university in Lisbon at the time. The neighboring "Instituto de Estudos Sociais" continued to grow aside its offspring and became one of the most prestigious institutes of the country in the fields of social and political studies, attracting some of the Portuguese leading academics in these related fields.

From its creation ISCTE was able to grant the degrees of bachelor and licenciatura (a 4 to 5 year degree, which were roughly equivalent to the present master's degree after the implementation of the Bologna process, often with a final written scientific dissertation). From 1983 onwards, ISCTE also granted the Portuguese full scientific master's degree (a specific degree above the common master's but still bellow a PhD.)

What was to be the first college of a never completed larger projected university (due to the carnation revolution of 1974) always remained as a non-integrated University Institute - situation that was institutionalized in 1988. From that date onwards, ISCTE grants all academic degrees, comprising Bachelors, Masters, PhDs, Honorary doctorates and Habilitations (equivalent to higher doctorates, called "agregação" in Portuguese).

ISCTE is today part of both the Fundação das Universidades Portuguesas (Fundation of Portuguese Universities) and the Conselho de Reitores das Universidades Portuguesas (Council of Rectors of the Portuguese Universities).

Research units

This institution comprises quality research centers in several domains [ [http://iscte2.iscte.pt/investigacao.php?t=6 Research Centres at ISCTE - official site] ] such as Management, Economy, Information Technology, Social Studies and others. Additionally, a significant number of the academic staff develop their research as affiliated members of national research institutes including some of the restricted Associate Laboratories of the State. Under these national research institutions, with critical mass on the respective domains, they develop research leading to publications in both international conferences and scientific journals .
