Ammonium dinitramide ADN (sometimes ADM) is an ionic salt that decomposes under heat to leave only nitrogen, oxygen, and water. The ions are the ammonium ion NH4+ and the dinitramine N(NO2)2-. It was originally invented by the Soviet Russians, but remained classified until it was rediscovered in the United States in the 80s.It makes an excellent solid rocket oxidizer with a slightly higher specific impulse than Ammonium perchlorate and more importantly, does not leave hydrogen chloride fumes. The salt is prone to detonation under high temperatures and shock more so than the perchlorate. 1 Synthesis can be carried out with ammonium nitrate, nitric acid, and super concentrated sulfuric acid, to whick a nonammonical base must be added before the acid dintramide decomposes. The final product comes by fractional crystallization. Currently the chemical is very expensive but mass production should reduce the cost.
