Gubernatorial elections in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are scheduled to be held in 2009, either before or after the creation of fifteen new provinces in February. The elections will be held in fifteen new provinces created by the 2006 constitution for the posts of governor and vice-governor in each new province; they will also be a supplement to the 2007 elections, although it is not known at the present time^[update] if this holding of semi-nationwide gubernatorial elections within the space of two years will become the de facto or de jure periodical pattern for electoral determination and renewal of provincial government mandates.

Details

Former Bandundu province

Since the former capital of Bandundu Province, Bandundu, is located in the new province of Mai-Ndombe (where the capital will be Inongo), it is likely that Mai-Ndombe will retain Bandundu's current government (elected in 2007) after 2009. Instead, elections will be held in the following provinces:

• Kwilu
• Kwango

Former Équateur province

It is likely that both the current governor and vice-governor of Équateur province will retain their posts in the newer Équateur Province (which will be formed out of the former Équateur district and the city of Mbandaka), so no election will be held in the latter province. However, elections will be held in the following provinces which are being carved out of the former province:

• Nord-Ubangi
• Mongala
• Sud-Ubangi
• Tshuapa

Former Kasai-Occidental province

Since the capital of Kananga is also the projected capital of the newer Lulua Province, it is likely that Lulua will inherit the 2007-elected government of Kasai-Occidental after 2009. An election will be held in the separate Kasai Province.

Former Kasai-Oriental province

It is likely that Kasai-Oriental's current provincial government will be inherited by Kasai-oriental Province after 2009. Elections will be held in the following provinces:

• Lomami
• Sankuru

Former Katanga province

It is likely that Katanga Province's current government will be inherited by Haut-Katanga Province after 2009, so elections will be held in the following provinces:

• Tanganyika
• Lualaba
• Haut-Lomami

Former Orientale province

It is likely that Orientale Province's current government will be inherited by Tshopo Province after 2009, so elections will be held in the following new provinces:

• Tanganyika
• Lualaba
• Haut-Lomami
