Samalayuca Dunes

Samalayuca Dunes

The Samalayuca Dunes is a large sand dune field located near the northern border of the Mexican state of Chihuahua, near the border with the U.S. state of Texas, some 52 km south of Ciudad Juárez. The field covers approximately 150 square kilometers in area, and includes some of the deepest sand dunes in North America.

Endemic species

As in many large dune systems, there are many species which are endemic to the Samalayuca dunes, so the region is biologically unique on a global scale. Most of the known endemic species are plants and various native bee species.

Movie setting

The dunes were used to film many of the exterior shots in the 1984 movie "Dune".
