John Gilbert is a film editor who works primarily in New Zealand. He was nominated for three major awards for the editing of "" (2001): an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award for Best Editing, and an ACE Eddie Award. Gilbert won the Satellite Award for Best Editing for the film.

John Gilbert's first position in the film industry was with the New Zealand National Film Unit while he was a university student. Gilbert never returned to his studies (history and anthropology), but moved on to Television New Zealand, where he worked as an assistant editor and editor. Gilbert worked for a time as a freelance assistant editor and sound editor. Gilbert's first credit as an editor on a full-length feature was for the film "Crush" (1992). Gilbert received a "Best Editing" award from the New Zealand Film and Television Awards for the film "Via Satellite" (1998). As noted previously, he was widely recognized for his editing of "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring", which was directed by Peter Jackson. He recently received a New Zealand Screen Award for editing "The World's Fastest Indian" (2005).
