"Fannia scalaris" (Fabricius, 1791), known as the latrine fly is a species of the family Fanniidae (The Leser house flies) that contains over 260 species of flies. This species is similar to the "housefly" ("Musca domestica") but is smaller, more slender, darker, and has only three longitudinal stripes on the thorax, as opposed to four in the housefly. [cite book|author=Rozkosny, R.; Gregor, F.; Pont, A.C.|year=1997 |title=The European Fanniidae (Diptera)|pages=80 pp|publisher=Institute of Landscape Ecology]

This and other "Fannia" species can cause accidental Rectal myiasis in humans. It is believed that myiasis occurs as a result of a "Fannia" fly laying eggs on the anus and larvae crawling in to the rectum to begin development. There are no serious medical consequences of this parasitic fly. (Diptera muscidae) in Belgium|pages=27-28 pp|Rev Med Liege] "Fanniidae scalaris" has also been documented causing Urogenital myiasis in children. [cite book|author=Werner H, Rall E, Hendrischk A|year=1975 |title=Urogenital myiasis with Fannia scalaris|pages=1397-8 pp|Dtsch Med Wochenschr]
