Law Society of Alberta

Pursuant to the Legal Profession Act (Alberta) [http://www.qp.gov.ab.ca/documents/Acts/L08.cfm?frm_isbn=0779715217] , the Law Society of Alberta is the self-governing body for lawyers in Alberta, Canada. Its mandate is to regulate the legal profession.

To practice law in the Province of Alberta, a person must be a member of the Law Society of Alberta. The Law Society of Alberta sets its own admission requirements. These requirements include that one must have a Bachelor of Laws degree, has completed a one year period of articling, and has successful passed the bar admission exams.

The LSA has the duty to govern the legal profession in Alberta. This responsibility includes the task of enforcing the rules of the Law Society, and to discipline offending lawyers. The ultimate penalty would be to disbar the lawyer, meaning that the person could no longer practice law in Alberta.
